 BIG SCRUB

Ocala National Forest's sand pine ecosystem is world's largest

Couple we met and spent yesterday on the trails together in the Big Scrub
President Teddy Roosevelt understood the value of the Ocala National Forest's "Big Scrub." A hundred years ago, on Nov. 24, 1908, he signed a bill formally establishing the Forest. Nearly all of the original 165,000 acres was sand pine scrub. Land purchases have enlarged the Forest to 382,318 acres.

WE are in the Ocala Forest without Internet service nor cell phone!  But, we are in a great campsite amongst the tall pines and live oaks.  We are paying $6 a night, bargain.  We have no services so are occasionally using the generator when we want to make toast or have hot water fast.  We took their advice and use the generator and propane to quickly get hot water when we need it.  The campsite is a trailhead so we park the quad beside the RV and takeoff to over 100 miles of sand trails.  So for the last 2 days we have been on our RZR and the wind in our face and the sun shining. We did over  30 miles yesterday.

We came to the city of Ocala today to shop and Dan had bought his oil and filter so he has found a small garage to help him with what he wanted for his truck.

Dan is the cribbage champion!  He is so proud as I usually am the reigning queen of cribbage.  Missing you all.  As I said goodbye to Louise and Margaret in North Carolina, we said we were missing them already and that is so true! We felt the love and so appreciated the hospitality and the love!

going back in time as we journeyed through Savannah, Georgia

Live Oak trees stay green all year long and the Spanish Moss hang majestically in the sun!

Just look at he age of these oak trees!  If they could speak ......  stories of the Confederates and the Union soldiers.  Did you know that Sherman gave Savannah as a Christmas present to Abe Lincoln on Dec. 22, 1864.  He was burning everything in his pathway but Savannah was so beautiful!

:)
This is my cousin, Meredith at her gallery where she has her jewelry in Savannah!  She is with her lovely Sophie.  Both are sweet Georgia peaches in our mind.  Thanks for a lovely time together, Meredith and for suggesting the best place to hear jazz music.  We really did enjoy  our time in Savannah, Georgia.

We are camping for $18 a night with full services near a lake and with tall pine forest.  We have been here 3 nights and will stay one more before venturing on.

Adventure in Osceola Forest Jan.20,2011

Today it was over 20C and I also discovered my new favorite thing.  (It use to be my built in vacuum)
Now it is my washer and dryer built in to my mastercloset and is one machine.  Yesterday we were in lots of swamp water and I needed desperately to do a load of wash after our RZR outing.  I love my washing machine-dryer.

Finding the sun!

I know we can't complain about the weather when it is so cold and snowy in Alberta!  They say to learn something new!
Soooo we are learning something new and creating our blog.  Great idea Meredith, my Georgia 3rd cousin peach!  So lovely to meet such a creative relative.  Loved your jewelry!
